Sam Miles

Sam Miles, born on October 26, 1948, carved a significant path through Tennessee's educational and athletic landscapes, culminating in his prestigious 2018 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His career, marked by dedication and excellence in various capacities, highlights his unwavering commitment to school athletics and administration across West Tennessee. Miles' journey into sports mentorship began as a basketball coach at Trenton Peabody High School and Dyersburg High School, where he spent over a decade nurturing young talent and fostering competitive spirit. His leadership extended beyond the court into academic administration. In 1983, Miles was appointed the principal of Peabody High School in Trenton, a position he held until 1995. Following this, he continued his role in academic leadership as the principal of Dyersburg High School from 1995 until 2006.

Miles' involvement with the TSSAA was particularly notable. He served on the TSSAA Board of Control for an impressive 12 years, contributing significantly to shaping policies and guidelines that advanced high school athletics in Tennessee. Beyond his direct involvement with schools, Miles extended his expertise to a broader educational spectrum, serving as the Henry Co. Director of Schools for four years. His excellence in administration was recognized with the Northwest Tennessee Principal of the Year award, further complimenting his 2005 accolades as the West Tennessee Divisional Principal of the Year and being a finalist for the State Principal of the Year.

Affiliations with esteemed educational bodies, such as the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals, underscored his advocacy for educational excellence. Before retiring in July 2015, Miles also contributed to the State Department of Education as a Teacher Evaluator, ensuring that the future of education in Tennessee remained in capable hands. His illustrious career, marked by these milestones, underscores a legacy of dedication to TSSAA and the betterment of secondary school athletic and academic standards in Tennessee.
