Born on March 24, 1942, Clayborne's journey in education and sports began at Columbia Central, where he embarked on a coaching career in 1966. Over his tenure, he coached various sports, excluding softball, baseball, and golf, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to nurturing student athletes.

Serving as an assistant boys' basketball coach under TSSAA Hall of Famer Hardy Loyd, Clayborne's early years laid the foundation for his eventual ascension to head boys' basketball coach in 1974 following Loyd's appointment as Principal. Under his guidance, the basketball team celebrated significant achievements, including winning over 300 games and making two TSSAA State Tournament appearances between 1974 and 1991. His efforts were recognized with the prestigious TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award in the 1998-1999 season, honoring him as the Athletic Director of the Year in his district.

Clayborne retired in 2010 after dedicating nearly 30 years to his role as an Athletic Director, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and service to TSSAA that was celebrated with his induction into the Hall of Fame. His career reflects a deep commitment to high school sports in Tennessee and a lasting impact on the lives of countless student-athletes he coached and mentored.
