Joe Clayton

Inducted 2010

Joe Clayton's illustrious career, culminating in his 2010 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, spans decades of dedicated service in the education and sports sectors of Tennessee. Born on February 7, 1932, Clayton began his journey as an educator and a coach in 1954, initially serving at Collierville High School for two brief stints separated by military service, and then at Oakhaven High School up to 1961. His passion for nurturing young minds extended beyond the playing fields as he transitioned into roles of greater administrative responsibility, first as Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor at Oakhaven High School from 1961 to 1964.

Clayton's leadership qualities flourished as he took on the role of Principal, a title he held for 24 years across three different schools: Oakhaven High School (1964-1971), Overton High School (1971-1974), and Briarcrest Christian School (1975-1988). His influence and commitment to education did not go unnoticed, earning him the presidency of the Briarcrest Christian School System from 1989 to 1996, followed by a 12-year tenure on the Shelby County Board of Education starting in 1998.

Arguably, one of Clayton's most notable contributions was his involvement with the TSSAA. Serving on the Board of Control from 1970 to 1973, Clayton played a pivotal role in shaping the policies and direction of high school athletics in Tennessee, ensuring fair play, competitiveness, and the integral development of student-athletes.

Further cementing his legacy, Clayton's accolades include numerous honors such as the Billy Murphy Outstanding Achievement Award by the University of Memphis Hall of Fame in 1994, the 1997 University of Memphis Educator of the Year Award, and the establishment of the Joseph A. Clayton Academic Award at Briarcrest Christian School in 1995. Additionally, his name was immortalized through the naming of the Briarcrest football stadium as "Clayton Field" and his induction into multiple Halls of Fame.

Joe Clayton's career reflects a steadfast commitment to education, athletics, and character formation, underscoring the reasons for his esteemed place in the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
