Ernest Chism

Ernest Chism embarked on his storied career as an educator and administrator in West Tennessee, dedicating over four decades to shaping the minds and lives of young students. His journey in the educational sector began in 1962 when he served as a football coach at Westwood High School, a position he held until 1968. Chism's commitment to education and leadership paved the way for further administrative roles, leading him to become the Assistant Principal at Hillcrest High School for six years.

In 1969, Chism's career progressed as he took on the role of Principal at Raleigh Egypt, where he served until 1976. His significant impact in this role marked only the beginning of his long and influential tenure as an administrator in the Tennessee education system. Chism’s most notable and extended service was at Germantown High School, where he was the Principal for 28 years. His leadership extended beyond the confines of a single school as he served as the Chairman of the Shelby County Schools Principals’ Association for the same duration.

His service did not go unnoticed by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), leading to him receiving the TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1995 and being named TSSAA District Administrator of the Year in 2001. Chism retired from the Shelby County School System in 2002, but his commitment to education continued as he was elected to serve on the Shelby County Board of Education until 2013.

In recognition of his extensive career and dedication to the betterment of high school athletics and administration within Tennessee, Ernest Chism was honored posthumously with an induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2017. His legacy as a stalwart supporter and leader within the educational and athletic communities of West Tennessee endures, highlighting a career filled with passion, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to youth and sports.
