V. F. Goddard

Volta Francis (V. F.) Goddard, whose career spanned several decades and influenced the realms of education and athletics in Tennessee, was posthumously inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2015. Goddard embarked on his educational journey as Superintendent of Schools in Michigan and Dakota between 1913 and 1924, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to student development and scholastic athletics.

In 1924, Goddard relocated to Alcoa, Tennessee, where he would serve as the Superintendent of Alcoa Schools for 33 years until his retirement in 1957. His tenure in Alcoa was marked by remarkable dedication to the growth and success of the school system, further evidenced by his instrumental role in establishing the football program at Alcoa High School that same year. This commitment to athletics, complemented by his educational prowess, culminated in the Alcoa High School football field being named in his honor: V. F. Goddard Field.

Goddard's service to TSSAA was both lengthy and impactful. He served on the TSSAA Board of Control for 23 years, from 1935 to 1957, including a distinguished tenure as President of the Board from 1950 to 1957. His commitment to TSSAA's mission and to fostering a positive environment for student-athletes in Tennessee was unparalleled. He played a crucial role in hiring the first TSSAA Executive Director, Mr. A. F. Bridges, thereby laying the groundwork for the organized, structured, and successful governance of high school athletics in the state.

Additionally, Goddard's influence extended beyond the direct realm of TSSAA through his legislative service as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly from 1961 to 1967 and his efforts in the construction of educational facilities in Alcoa. His academic contributions included publishing scholarly articles and serving as a guest lecturer, further highlighting his broad impact on education in Tennessee.

V. F. Goddard’s induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2015 is a testament to a career devoted to the advancement of high school athletics and education, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire and shape the landscape of sports and learning in Tennessee.
