Dick Henley

Inducted 2012

Dick Henley, born on November 24, 1949, forged an illustrious career deeply rooted in the development and promotion of athletics for the deaf, culminating in his 2012 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His service and dedication as an administrator and coach fundamentally transformed the athletic landscape at the Tennessee School for the Deaf (TSD), where he served for over a quarter of a century.

Beginning his career at TSD, Henley initially made his mark as an administrator and coach, roles he enthusiastically embraced for more than 25 years. In 1987, he took on the role of head football coach, a position he held with distinction, implementing strategies and fostering a team spirit that notably led his team to be named Deaf Digest 2011 Team of the Year in eight-man football, an honor considered as a National Championship recognition. Henley's own experience as a former player who was part of the 1967 team that captured a national championship undoubtedly informed his coaching philosophy and strategies.

Expanding his influence beyond coaching, Henley assumed the position of Athletic Director at TSD in 1990. His leadership extended into administrative realms as he served as President of the Education Association of TSD. Under his stewardship, TSD hosted numerous events and tournaments, including the prestigious Mason-Dixon volleyball and basketball tournaments. Furthermore, Henley was instrumental in organizing an annual pre-season basketball tournament that brought together area schools for the deaf, reinforcing community and athletic excellence.

Henley's commitment to the well-being and development of his students extended beyond the field and court; he voluntarily devoted time and effort to the TSD’s Run for the Deaf held each Spring, showcasing his dedication to both the athletic and broader well-being of the students and community he served.

His 2012 TSSAA Hall of Fame induction serves as a testament to Dick Henley’s profound impact on athletics for the deaf in Tennessee, celebrating a career that not only achieved remarkable success on the field but also fostered inclusivity, community, and perseverance among his students and athletes.
