O'Neal Henley

Inducted 2011

O'Neal Henley's distinguished career, culminating in his 2011 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, spans decades of service as both an educator and coach. Born on April 19, 1943, Henley dedicated over seventeen years to coaching girls' basketball, football, and track at Jackson's North Side High School, showcasing his versatility and commitment to nurturing young athletes across various sports. In 1985, he further expanded his coaching experience as the Offensive Coordinator for the Lambuth University football team.

Beyond the playing fields, Henley's contribution to education and administration was profound. He served as Assistant Principal at North Side High School for twelve years, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to academic excellence. His administrative acumen was further recognized during his six-year tenure as Athletic Director at North Side, where he undoubtedly influenced the positive development of the school's athletic programs.

Henley's leadership roles extended to school principalship, first at North Side High School from 1973 to 1985, and later at Jackson Central-Merry High School from 1993 to 1997. His principalship periods were marked by significant accomplishments, including leading the 1983 North Side football team to a remarkable 10-1 season—the most wins any North Side football team had achieved up to that point. This achievement earned him the title of WDXI Coach of the Year in 1983.

In his bid to further enhance education in West Tennessee, Henley played a pivotal role in implementing the "Best of the West" program and served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the 1997-1998 school year. His career is a testament to his dedication to both athletics and educational administration, making his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame a fitting tribute to his significant contributions to TSSAA and the broader educational and athletic communities in Tennessee.
