Harry Gill

Inducted 2009

Harry Gill's illustrious career, spanning several decades, was rightfully acknowledged with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2009. His journey began in 1972, marking the start of a 16-year tenure as a teacher and coach at Smyrna High School, during which he led the girls' basketball team to remarkable successes including a Class AAA State Championship in 1982, four Region Championships, and nine Region Tournament appearances.

Parallel to his coaching career, from 1976 to 1981, Gill served as a TSSAA official for football, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to Tennessee high school sports. His leadership and administrative skills were further recognized as he transitioned to the roles of assistant principal and principal, from 1988 to 1997 at LaVergne High School and Rockvale Elementary School, and from 1997 to 2003 at Cedar Grove Elementary School, respectively.

Ascending to the position of Director of Schools for Rutherford County in 2003—a role he was holding at the time of his Hall of Fame induction—Gill's visionary leadership continued to make profound impacts on the school system. His service extended beyond administrative duties; he was active in community and academic initiatives, exemplified by his directorship of Summer Schools from 1993 to 1995, his presidency of the Rutherford Co. Principals’ Association from 1999 to 2002, and his involvement in the Education Steering Committee for the 49th District in 2002.

Gill's contributions to TSSAA and athletics at large included guest speaking at TSSAA Coaching Clinics in 1977 and 1982. His schools repeatedly garnered acclaim for academic excellence under his guidance, earning him nominations and awards, including being a nominee for the TN Athletic Coaches Assoc. National High School Coach of the Year in 1986 and receiving accolades from The Tennessean and Nashville Banner as the Midstate Coach of the Year in the years 1976, 1982, and 1983.

Harry Gill's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2009 was a fitting tribute to a career dedicated to the advancement of high school athletics and education in Tennessee.
