Mike Bone

Inducted 2009

William "Mike" Bone's remarkable career in education and sports culminated in a well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2009. His journey began on January 23, 1942, and would see him leave a lasting impact on high school athletics in Tennessee. Over the span of a decade, Bone dedicated himself to teaching and coaching at Community High School for three years, followed by a seven-year tenure at Shelbyville Central High School. There, he coached multiple sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and track and field, hinting at his versatility and passion for student athletic development.

Transitioning from coaching, Bone served as the athletic director at Shelbyville Central High School for three years, where his leadership skills shone. He was then appointed assistant principal, a position he held for two years, before becoming the principal of the same institution for an impressive 19 years. Under his guidance, Shelbyville Central High School flourished, and his commitment to enriching student lives extended beyond his principalship as he took on the role of superintendent of Bedford County Schools for nine years.

Mike Bone's service to TSSAA was exceptional. He served as a District and Region Tournament Director for 16 years. Under his tenure, his school hosted seven TSSAA Sub-State Tournaments. Remarkably, while he was principal, the girls' basketball team at Shelbyville Central High School achieved state champion or runner-up status 17 times. He also played a crucial role in expanding the athletic program, initiating golf, tennis, softball, and both boys' and girls' soccer programs at the school. His contributions were recognized when he received the A. F. Bridges Award for School System Administrator of the Year for the 2001-2002 school year. This recognition underscored his profound influence on high school athletics and education, making his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame a testament to his dedication and service to Tennessee's youth sports.
