Nelson Smotherman embarked on a distinguished career that would see him become a pivotal figure in the realm of high school sports within Tennessee. Born in Murfreesboro, Smotherman's journey into sports statisticianship began with his association with WGNS Radio, where he lent his talents for a total of twenty years, split between 1950-1955 and 1960-1975. Additionally, his expertise was sought after at WAPB Radio for two years and at WMTS Radio from 1976 to 1980, marking a period of extensive involvement in sports media.

Smotherman's contributions to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) have left a lasting imprint on the state's high school athletics. Starting in 1960, he took on the role of statistician for the TSSAA Boys’ State Basketball Tournament, a position he has held ever since, underscoring his long-term commitment to the organization. Shortly thereafter, in 1961, he expanded his responsibilities to include the TSSAA Girls’ State Basketball Tournament, showcasing his dedication to promoting and documenting high school sports across genders.

Perhaps one of Smotherman's most significant achievements was the compilation of the TSSAA State Record Book published in 1991. This monumental work encompassed records that spanned decades, offering an invaluable repository of high school athletic achievements in Tennessee. His meticulous work did not stop there, as he also compiled a comprehensive history of Murfreesboro Central High School football among numerous other accolades.

Smotherman's ability to meticulously gather and organize records for both Boys’ and Girls’ State Basketball Tournaments dating back to their inceptions in the early 20th century demonstrates an unparalleled commitment to preserving Tennessee's high school sports heritage. His tireless efforts were formally recognized in 1997 when he was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, not merely for the roles he held but for the profound impact he made as a contributor to high school athletics in Tennessee.
