Jim Poteete, born on March 14, 1935, built an illustrious career in education and sports, marking his journey with significant contributions and achievements that led to his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1997. His career in teaching and coaching spanned 17 years, beginning in 1959 at Aberdeen High School in Mississippi, and then transitioning to Tennessee, where he served at Chester County High School, Fayette County High School, and Humboldt High School until 1976.

During his tenure at Humboldt High School, Poteete simultaneously took on the role of Assistant Principal at Humboldt Vocational School from 1972 to 1977, showcasing his ability to juggle administrative duties while remaining committed to coaching. His administrative prowess was further recognized when he became the principal of Humboldt High School in 1977, a position he held until 1991 before moving to serve as principal at Chester County High School until his retirement in 1995.

Apart from his direct involvement in schools, Poteete's commitment to high school athletics was evident through his 11-year service on the TSSAA Board of Control, where he played a vital role in guiding and shaping the policies and direction of high school sports in Tennessee. His impact on the field was recognized by his community and peers, as evidenced by his induction into the Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Gibson County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, along with being honored as Coach of the Year three times in West Tennessee.

Jim Poteete’s career is a testament to his dedication to fostering sportsmanship, leadership, and academic excellence among high school athletes in Tennessee. His legacy, highlighted by his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1997, continues to inspire educators and administrators in the realm of high school athletics.
