Phillip and Sue Simpson

Inducted 2001

Phillip and Sue Ann Simpson, born on August 27, 1923, and December 10, 1927, respectively, embarked on a journey that deeply intertwined their lives with high school wrestling starting in 1968. That year marked their attendance at their first high school wrestling match at Father Ryan High School, igniting a passionate commitment to the sport that would span decades. Their unwavering support and contributions to wrestling were recognized in 2001 when they were inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in the category of contributors.

Over the years, the Simpsons established themselves as pillars of the wrestling community. Not only did they not miss a TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament since their initial engagement with the sport in 1968, but they also fostered a family environment that breathed wrestling. Their two sons, a son-in-law, and a grandson followed their footsteps, serving as high school wrestling coaches. Furthermore, two of their sons were wrestling officials, and another son took on the role of president of a local wrestling club, demonstrating the widespread influence of their dedication.

The Simpsons' daughters contributed as head scorekeepers and announcers at wrestling events, ensuring the smooth operation and promotion of the tournaments. Encouraging active participation across generations, four sons and a son-in-law were high school wrestlers, with three grandsons winning the TSSAA State Wrestling Championships in the 2001 tournament alone. Five grandsons in total amassed 14 TSSAA State Wrestling Championships, a testament to the family's talent and competitive spirit.

Their grandson, also named Phillip, distinguished himself by becoming the first four-time TSSAA State Wrestling Champion between 1998 and 2001. His achievements at West Point, as both an Outstanding Wrestler for three years and an All-American for two, highlighted the level of excellence the Simpsons nurtured within their family.

Beyond just nurturing champions, Phillip and Sue Ann Simpson dedicated over two decades hosting hospitality rooms at tournaments, contributing significantly to the wrestling community's morale and spirit. Their passion for wrestling extended beyond state levels as they also enjoyed attending National Wrestling Tournaments. Their induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2001 acknowledged not just their personal dedication but the holistic contribution of their family to high school wrestling in Tennessee. The Simpsons' legacy is a profound narrative of family, dedication, and excellence within the sport of wrestling.
