John Scobey

Inducted 1994

John David Scobey, born on October 7, 1922, epitomized dedication and excellence in his contributions to athletics, particularly in his service to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Scobey's career in sports began notably as an athlete; he captained both the David Lipscomb College and Vanderbilt University basketball teams and also played baseball for these institutions. His transition from player to mentor was seamless—as evidenced by his stint as Head Baseball and Assistant Basketball Coach at Vanderbilt University from 1949 to 1955. Beyond the university scene, Scobey's love for the game saw him playing two seasons of professional basketball and engaging in semi-professional baseball.

However, it was Scobey's involvement with officiating that left a lasting mark on sports, particularly within the TSSAA. Beginning in 1945, Scobey dedicated 27 years of his life to being a TSSAA official. His expertise and leadership in this arena were further recognized by his role as President of the Middle Tennessee Football Officials’ Association. Beyond the local level, Scobey's acumen for the rules of the game saw him serve an impressive 25 years as a Southeastern Conference football official and 17 years within the basketball sphere. His commitment also extended to the Ohio Valley Conference for 16 years, where he was also president of both the basketball and football officials' groups.

Scobey's impact was such that the Middle Tennessee Football Officials’ Association established the “John David Scobey Award” in his honor—an annual accolade recognizing outstanding officials. This, alongside his role as an official TSSAA Rules Interpreter, underscores Scobey's profound influence on and off the field.

His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1994 was not only a testament to his enduring legacy but also a celebration of his multifaceted contributions to athletics—from player and coach to official and leader. John Scobey's legacy continues to inspire and shape the world of sports, ensuring that his influence is felt long after his active years.
