Thurman D. Reynolds, born on July 17, 1917, in Pickett County, Tennessee, embarked on a commendable career dedicated to enhancing high school sports, culminating in his 1990 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Commencing his career in education and coaching in 1946 at Jackson North Side High School, Reynolds demonstrated an unwavering commitment to youth sports and education that spanned decades.

As a teacher and coach from 1946 to 1964, Reynolds left an indelible mark at Jackson North Side High School. His tenure saw him assume the roles of football, boys’ basketball, and girls’ basketball coach, accumulating an impressive combined record of 822 wins, 196 losses, and 7 ties. His dedication to coaching and development of young athletes shaped the early years of his career, laying a foundation for his subsequent administrative roles.

Transitioning from coaching to educational administration, Reynolds served as the principal of Jackson North Side High School for 24 years, between 1962 and 1986. His leadership extended beyond the confines of the school, evidencing his commitment to fostering high school athletics across Tennessee.

Reynolds’ service to the TSSAA was remarkable, highlighted by his 16-year tenure on the TSSAA Board of Control from 1965 to 1981. His contributions during this period were instrumental in guiding the direction and policies of the association, ensuring the continued growth and integrity of high school sports in Tennessee. Furthermore, his involvement extended to serving as Commissioner of the Volunteer Football Conference and the West Tennessee Basketball Officials’ Association between 1964 and 1968, showcasing his versatility and dedication to high school sports across multiple fronts.

After retiring in 1986, Reynolds continued to contribute to his community by serving on the Madison County School Board until 1990. This final act of public service before his Hall of Fame induction reflects a lifelong dedication to improving educational and athletic opportunities for youth.
