Milton Mayo

Inducted 1990

Milton Mayo embarked on a remarkable journey in education and athletics that began in 1937 when he became a teacher and coach at Grand Junction High School. With a coaching stint that lasted until 1939, Mayo demonstrated early promise by leading the basketball team to a commendable record of 35 wins against 14 losses. Upon returning in 1947, after a brief hiatus, he joined Milan High School, where his influence expanded significantly, undertaking roles not only as a basketball coach but also coaching football and baseball until 1963. His basketball coaching during this time was particularly noteworthy, amassing an impressive record of 319 wins to 135 losses and leading his teams to five TSSAA State Basketball Tournament appearances before the present-day classification system was put into place, spanning from 1951 to 1955.

Transitioning from coaching, Mayo's career took a turn towards school administration. He served as the principal of Milan High School for four years from 1963 to 1967 and subsequently assumed the role of school superintendent for Milan Schools until his retirement in 1979. His tenure as superintendent was marked by significant achievements including the construction of the new Milan High School and the school's affiliation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

For his exceptional contributions to education and athletics, Milton Mayo was honored on numerous occasions. Notably, June 15, 1979, was declared "Milton Mayo Appreciation Day" in Milan, TN, acknowledging his service in the educational field.

In 1990, his outstanding service to TSSAA and his remarkable career were formally recognized when he was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, an accolade that celebrated his dedication and impact on high school sports in Tennessee.
