Mike Reed

Mike Reed, born on July 20, 1943, developed a profound legacy in athletics and education that led to his esteemed induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2006. Reed embarked on his career as an influential teacher and coach in 1967, dedicating 16 years to shaping young minds and athletes across various schools. His tenure at Bulls Gap High School from 1967 to 1980 notably included leading the boys’ basketball team between 1975 and 1980 to an impressive 87-58 record, culminating in Class A Sub-State Tournament appearances in 1979 and 1980. Reed's commitment extended to girls’ softball in 1980-1981 and girls’ basketball at Morristown-Hamblen High School West in 1982-1983.

Transitioning into administrative roles, Reed served as an athletic director at Morristown-Hamblen West High School for eight years across two stints (1987-1993 and 2003-2005) and held assistant principal positions at various schools between 1980 and 1993. He culminated his educational leadership as principal of Morristown-Hamblen High School West from 1993 to 2005, where he left a lasting impact on both academic and athletic fronts.

Reed's exemplary service to the TSSAA spans over two decades, including significant contributions as both Vice-President (1992-1995) and President (1995-present) of the Board of Control. His tenure on the board has been marked by steadfast dedication to promoting sportsmanship, athletics, and holistic student development throughout Tennessee. His leadership within TSSAA, coupled with his administrative achievements and commitment to excellence in sports and education, has left an indelible mark on Tennessee’s athletic and academic landscape. Reed’s 2006 TSSAA Hall of Fame induction commemorates a career defined by dedication, excellence, and a deep commitment to nurturing young athletes and students.
