James Phifer

Inducted 2006

James D. Phifer, born on December 21, 1930, dedicated over three decades to high school sports in Tennessee, culminating in his 2006 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His remarkable career began in 1959 at Chattanooga "City" High School, where he served as a teacher and coach until 1972. During his tenure there, Phifer led his basketball teams to two TSSAA State Championships in 1970 and 1972 while also coaching golf from 1967 to 1972.

In 1972, Phifer moved to Notre Dame High School, continuing his coaching legacy in boys’ golf until 1990 and achieving an astounding career record of 556-64. Under his guidance, the Notre Dame golf team made 11 TSSAA State Tournament appearances, clinching three state championships (1970, 1972, 1985), and securing multiple regional and district titles. Alongside his success in golf, Phifer also contributed to the school's basketball and football programs, with his basketball teams making several noteworthy appearances in state tournaments.

Beyond coaching, Phifer's leadership extended to administrative roles. He served as Athletic Director and Principal at both schools during various periods, ranging from his first stint as an assistant principal in 1964 to his final years as a principal until 1992. His commitment to high school athletics was further demonstrated through his 17-year involvement with the TSSAA Legislative Council from 1971 to 1995, where he notably held the position of Vice-President from 1992 to 1995.

The impact of James Phifer's dedication to high school sports was recognized through numerous accolades, including his induction into the Notre Dame High School Hall of Honors in 1992, receiving the Guy Francis Award in 1993, and entry into the Chattanooga Old Timers Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. The Notre Dame Gymnasium was renamed "Phifer Gymnasium" in his honor that same year.

Phifer passed away in November 2003, but his legacy lives on through various awards such as The Jim Phifer Award for Outstanding Achievement in Golf and The James D. Phifer Spirit of Notre Dame Scholarship, established in his name. His contributions to high school sports, particularly through his service to the TSSAA, have left an indelible mark on Tennessee's athletic community.
