Joe Halfacre, born on January 15, 1945, embarked on a remarkable journey in the realm of education and sports that spanned over four decades, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2004. Halfacre's career began at Gainesboro Elementary School in 1967, quickly moving to Fox Middle School in 1968, before laying down roots at Jackson County High School from 1970 to 1978 and then again from 1981 to 1997. In these years, he solidified his legacy as a transformative coach in both girls’ and boys’ basketball.

During his tenure at Jackson County High School, Halfacre led the girls’ basketball team to unparalleled heights, achieving a TSSAA State Championship in 1973. His expertise and dedication seeded further success with a state runner-up position in 1974 and a state tournament berth in 1975. The girls’ team under his guidance boasted five district championships, three region championships, a region runner-up position, and four sub-state appearances. Not limited to coaching girls’ basketball, Halfacre also coached the boys' basketball team from 1992 to 1997, guiding them to win a region championship in 1996.

In addition to creating a competitive sports environment, Halfacre was recognized for his contributions outside the basketball court. Since 1991, he fulfilled the role of Technology Coordinator for the Jackson County School System, showcasing his versatility and commitment to student development in multiple facets. His successes as a coach were further highlighted by awards such as the Nashville Tennessean’s Mid-State Girls’ Coach of the Year in 1973 and District Coach of the Year honors in 1974, 1975, and 1994, rounding up an impressive overall coaching record of 365 wins to 169 losses.

Joe Halfacre’s outstanding service to the TSSAA and his significant impact on high school sports and education earned him a well-deserved spot in the TSSAA Hall of Fame, marking a fitting tribute to his passionate dedication to youth and sports in Tennessee.
