Mickey Dunn

Inducted 2004

Mickey Dunn's illustrious career in education and athletics, culminating in his 2004 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, spans several decades and showcases his profound influence on high school sports and administration in Tennessee. Born on March 11, 1952, Dunn embarked on his career as a teacher and coach in 1974 at E. O. Coffman Middle School in Lawrenceburg, TN, where he dedicated six years to nurturing young talent.

His leadership skills soon led him to administrative roles, initially serving as the principal of E. O. Coffman Middle School from 1980 to 1982, before taking on the role of assistant principal at Lawrence County High School for nearly a decade (1982-1991). During this period, Dunn also contributed his expertise to athletics directly, serving as assistant football and boys’ basketball coach until 1984, and then as head boys’ basketball coach until 1990, alongside coaching cross country in 1990-1991.

Dunn's commitment to athletics administration was further solidified during his seven-year tenure as Athletic Director at Lawrence County High School (1984-1991), demonstrating an unwavering dedication to the development of high school sports. His passion for sports and education was recognized on a wider scale during his nine years on the TSSAA Board of Control (1995-2004), where he played a critical role in shaping policies and initiatives that enhanced the quality and competitiveness of high school athletics across the state.

Complementing his service to TSSAA, Dunn had stints with the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association (TACA), contributing as Assistant Director (1998-2000) and serving as the State Chairman of Boys’ Basketball Committee in 1990. His efforts in sports administration at Lawrence County High School, particularly his work in adding eight sports teams and developing on-campus facilities, underscore his commitment to enhancing athletic opportunities for students.

Beyond these achievements, Dunn's broader contributions to education are notable; he developed the 8th grade American History Curriculum in 1980, initiated the Academic Honors Society at Lawrence County High School, and provided pivotal teacher training and motivational speeches.

Mickey Dunn's 2004 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame is not only a testament to his service within the TSSAA but also an acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to enriching the experiences of students and athletes throughout Tennessee. His legacy, marked by immense contributions to both athletics and education, persists as a guiding light for future educators and administrators.
