Gill Gideon

Inducted 1986

Gill Gideon's illustrious career, culminating in his 1986 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, began with a 17-year tenure as a teacher and coach from 1949 to 1966. During this period, Gideon made significant contributions to high school sports at Lexington High School, serving from 1949 to 1962. As the boys' basketball coach, he led the team to three TSSAA State Tournament appearances. He also coached the girls' basketball team to one State Tournament appearance, alongside coaching roles in football and baseball, marking a diverse and impactful coaching career that influenced many young athletes.

From 1962 to 1965, Gideon expanded his influence in school athletics by taking on the role of an assistant principal and coach at Tigrett Junior High School in Jackson, Tennessee. This was followed by a brief but significant year as principal of Alexander School in Jackson, TN, from 1965 to 1966. Parallel to these roles, from 1962 to 1966, Gideon dedicated himself as a TSSAA official, making notable contributions by officiating in the 1963 and 1964 State Basketball Tournaments, as well as in football.

Gideon's profound connection to TSSAA and his deep understanding of school sports paved the way for his executive roles within the association. From 1966 to 1972, he served as the TSSAA assistant executive secretary. His leadership and vision for high school athletics in Tennessee were further solidified when he became the TSSAA Executive Secretary from 1972 to 1986, becoming only the second person to hold this position. Under his guidance, TSSAA saw significant developments and growth, reflecting his commitment to enhancing high school sports across the state.

Gideon's impact extended beyond state lines through his involvement with the National Federation State High School Associations (NFHS), where he served as President from 1981 to 1982 and contributed to various committees, including basketball, track and field, football rules, and more. His service exemplifies a career dedicated not only to TSSAA but to the advancement of high school sports on a national level.
