Wylie Wheeler's impactful career, culminating in his 1993 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, began with his role as a teacher and coach from 1947 to 1965. Wheeler's journey started at McKenzie High School, where for a year, he coached football, followed by a stint at Gleason High School coaching both football and basketball from 1948 to 1950. However, it was at Milan High School where he truly left his mark, coaching girls' basketball from 1950 to 1965. Under his guidance, the team experienced unprecedented success, amassing a record of 339 wins and only 102 losses with no losing seasons. His team secured 9 county titles, 6 district titles, 1 region title, and notably, the 1960 TSSAA State Championship. The 1959–1960 season was historic, with Wheeler's team winning 37 straight games and achieving the longest winning streak of 69 games from 1959 to 1961, underlining Wheeler's exceptional coaching skills.

Wheeler's contribution to education and athletics extended beyond coaching. He served as principal of Milan High School for 12 years (1967-1979) and then as superintendent of Milan Special School District for 9 years (1979-1988), showcasing his dedication to the academic and extracurricular success of students. Beyond school administration, he contributed six years as a TSSAA official from 1957 to 1963, further demonstrating his commitment to Tennessee high school sports. His service was recognized when he served as President of the State Secondary Schools Principal Association from 1975 to 1976.

Wheeler's career was marked by a balance between academic excellence and athletic success, always prioritizing education while fostering outstanding athletic achievements. His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1993 was a testament to his significant contributions and dedication to high school sports in Tennessee.
