William E. “Bill” Todd, Sr., born on September 25, 1930, embarked on a distinguished career in athletics and education that led to his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1989. His journey began as a teacher and coach in 1958, spanning across 13 years until 1971. His coaching tenure at Portageville High School in Michigan for a year and subsequently at Kingsbury High School in Memphis, Tennessee, was marked by notable successes including a basketball coaching record of 160-52, a city championship, and leading his team to the TSSAA State Tournament Quarterfinals in 1964.

Transitioning from coaching, Todd served as the Athletic Director for the Memphis City School System for 17 years (1971-1988). His leadership extended beyond the playing fields; he also became a legislative liaison for Memphis City Schools. Throughout his career, Todd's association with the TSSAA was profound. Between 1967 and 1972, he served as a TSSAA official, enriching the games with his expertise and fair judgment.

Todd's service to TSSAA and the broader athletic and educational communities was exemplary. He was instrumental in conducting play-off games and state tournaments, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to promoting fair play and excellence in high school athletics. His accolades include being named Athletic Director of the Year in 1977 and holding various prestigious positions such as President of the Board of Education for Memphis City Schools, and leadership roles within the Memphis Quarterback Club, the Memphis Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Tennessee High School Athletic Administrators Association, which he helped organize in 1972, and even influencing at a national level as a board member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Association.

In recognition of his vast contributions, Todd received numerous awards including the NFHS Citation Award, the National High School Coaches Association's Athletic Director of the Year Award for Division 3, and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association's Distinguished Service Award. Following his illustrious career, Todd's legacy was further immortalized when he was posthumously inducted into the National Council of Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in 1991. The Kingsbury High School Alumni also established a scholarship in his honor, celebrating Bill Todd Day on July 20, 1991, in Shelby County, a fitting tribute to a man whose life and work significantly impacted high school athletics in Tennessee. Todd passed away on December 16, 2004, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, excellence, and service to TSSAA and high school sports.
