Following his formative years, Sobel embarked on a professional journey with American General Life & Accident Insurance Company, where he served as Manager of Advertising & Sponsorships. In 1985, under Sobel’s administration, American General began its sponsorship of the prestigious TSSAA Mr. Football, Mr. Basketball, and Miss Basketball Awards. These awards recognized outstanding athletes annually, highlighting Sobel's commitment to celebrating sports excellence in Tennessee.

Beyond the awards, Sobel's contributions included the presentation of a stately banner to each school that won a state championship, an initiative that not only commemorated champions but also nurtured a sense of pride and achievement within school communities.
