William Millsaps

William Hobart Millsaps, born on August 4, 1910, embarked on a distinguished career in education and athletics, culminating in his 1984 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His journey began as a dedicated teacher and coach from 1933 to 1948, manifesting his passion for sports and mentorship at Hixson High School, Lenoir City High School, and Chattanooga Central High School. His leadership qualities were further recognized when he served as principal for 30 years, initially at Red Bank High School from 1948 to 1950, before returning to Chattanooga Central High School, where he remained until 1978.

Millsaps' unwavering commitment to high school athletics and the TSSAA was evident through his extensive service on the TSSAA Board of Control for 17 years, from 1960 to 1976, including a term as Vice President from 1974 to 1976. His involvement with the TSSAA began even earlier, as he contributed his expertise to the TSSAA Legislative Council from 1950 to 1954. Beyond these official roles, his dedication to the spirit of high school sports was showcased through his instrumental role in organizing benefit basketball games. These events were crucial in raising funds to pay off the mortgage for the TSSAA’s new state office building following its move from Trenton to Hermitage in 1970.

As a versatile figure in the realm of high school athletics, Millsaps participated in interscholastic athletics, officiated football and basketball games, and coached a variety of sports, including football, golf, basketball, baseball, and track. His multifaceted involvement in high school sports not only enriched the lives of countless young athletes but also significantly contributed to the foundational strength and success of the TSSAA. William Hobart Millsaps passed away on December 17, 1987, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to educational leadership and the promotion of high school athletics in Tennessee.
