Inducted 1987

Bob Heriges, III was a remarkable figure in the realm of high school athletics in Tennessee, remembered most for his extensive service as both an official and coach before his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1987. Born on August 20, 1921, Heriges initiated his coaching career at Father Ryan High School from 1947 until 1952, where he led the baseball team to become the 1948 NIL City Champions. He also served as an assistant for both football and basketball teams during his tenure at Father Ryan. In 1952, Heriges transitioned to Hillsboro High School, where he continued his involvement in high school sports, contributing as an assistant football coach until 1953.

Parallel to his coaching career, Heriges distinguished himself as a dedicated TSSAA official over a span of 21 years, from 1947 through 1968. His officiating career was marked by significant contributions to Tennessee high school sports, including overseeing a variety of important events such as Nashville's "Thanksgiving Day Clinic Bowls," the March of Dimes Christmas holiday basketball games, the 1957 TSSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament at Vanderbilt, and the 1959 TSSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament at Lipscomb. In addition to these notable assignments, he refereed in approximately 50 TSSAA District, Regional, and other tournaments between 1950 and 1967, showcasing his extensive involvement and dedication to the growth and integrity of high school sports.

Furthermore, Heriges served as the TSSAA Supervisor of Officials for 15 years, a period during which he significantly contributed to the development of officiating standards and practices in Tennessee. His leadership roles extended beyond the TSSAA, as he also held positions as President and Secretary for both the Middle Tennessee Football Officials Association and the Middle Tennessee Basketball Officials Association. His efforts were recognized and remembered through the "Bob Heriges Sportsmanship Award," presented annually by the Middle Tennessee Football Officials Association to a high school football team demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship.

In addition to his TSSAA-related achievements, Heriges was involved in collegiate level officiating for 15 years with the Ohio Valley Conference, where an award for head linesmen is named in his honor. His contributions extended beyond just officiating and coaching; he worked tirelessly to improve relations between officials, school administrators, athletes, and spectators. Heriges’ impact on high school athletics in Tennessee was profound, extending well beyond his death on June 20, 1967. His legacy continues to inspire and guide the development of high school sports within the state.
