Richard Henry Graves, born on January 26, 1932, and passing away on October 23, 1991, was an influential figure in the TSSAA, notably recognized for his dedication and service, leading to his posthumous induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2000. Graves embarked on his journey in education and sports as a coach and teacher, serving from 1954 to 1974 at various schools, including Glendale Elementary, Joelton High School, Overton High School, Cumberland High School, and Hillwood High School. His coaching tenure spanned across multiple sports, coaching baseball, basketball, football, and track.

In addition to his coaching career, Graves also played a significant role as an administrator. He served as an associate principal and athletic director at McGavock High School for 13 years, from 1973 to 1986. Following this, he continued his passion for sports administration as the athletic director for the Metropolitan Nashville School System from 1986 until his untimely death in 1991. Beyond his administrative roles within schools, Graves was deeply involved in the broader sports community. His accolades include being the first Outstanding Amateur in the Nashville Amateur Old Times Baseball Association from 1960 to 1975 and receiving multiple awards for his service, including the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Administration Coach of the Year in 1984 and the Tennessee NCSSAD Region and State Athletic Director of the Year between 1987 and 1988.

Graves' legacy extends beyond his lifetime with honors such as the annual Richard Graves Memorial Golf Tournament, which emphasizes the lasting impact of his contributions to the TSSAA and the athletic community at large.
