Charles Driskill

Charles William Driskill, born on March 10, 1930, crafted a distinguished career in school administration and sports, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1992. Driskill began his journey in education as a teacher and coach at Everett High School in Maryville, TN, in 1955, before moving to Clinton High School in 1956, where he worked until 1962. His tenure at Clinton was marked by notable achievements, including facilitating the integration process by allowing his 1957 – 58 squad to compete against a racially integrated Oak Ridge High School team.

Driskill’s leadership extended beyond coaching as he took on the role of Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Clinton High School from 1962 to 1968. His tenure in these roles was highlighted by his initiative to expand the school's athletic program, notably through the addition of track and reinstatement of baseball as TSSAA-sponsored sports, showcasing his commitment to enhancing student involvement in athletics.

In 1968, Driskill embarked on a 22-year tenure as Principal of Maryville High School, further solidifying his legacy in educational leadership and contributions to school sports. Under his guidance, the school saw the construction of a new football stadium and gymnasium, the addition of softball, soccer, and wrestling to its athletic offerings, and the successful hosting of football playoff games. These efforts underscored his dedication to enriching the school’s athletic environment and promoting student participation in varied sports.

Besides his administrative accomplishments, Driskill was involved in the TSSAA at multiple levels, serving on various regional and state committees. This involvement was a testament to his profound impact on school sports and athletic administration in Tennessee. His career, marked by advocacy for sports integration, expansion of athletic programs, and infrastructural development for athletics at Maryville High School, demonstrates a legacy of dedication to student athletes and the values upheld by the TSSAA.
