Adam DeBerry

Inducted 1999

Adam DeBerry, born on April 23, 1918, built a remarkable career in education and sports, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1999. DeBerry's journey began as a principal and teacher at Iconium Elementary School in Cannon County, TN, from 1940 to 1942, where he was one of only two teachers. After a brief stint from 1943 to 1946 working as a gasoline inspector for the state, he returned to education and coaching, holding positions at Jordonia Reformatory School (1942-1943), Goodlettsville Elementary School (1946-1951), Jere Baxter Elementary School (1951-1954), and Litton High School (1954-1957).

DeBerry’s leadership extended beyond the classroom into administrative roles, serving as assistant principal at Maplewood High School from 1960 to 1971 and again from 1975 to 1978, and as principal of Cumberland Junior High School from 1971 to 1975. However, it was his service to the TSSAA that highlighted his dedication to Tennessee’s student-athletes. DeBerry was a member of the TSSAA Legislative Council for 13 years (1965-1978) and served as its chairman in 1977. Furthermore, his commitment was evident in his 15 years as a TSSAA official, where he directly contributed to the integrity and fairness of high school sports.

His participation in the TSSAA TOPS Program (Tennessee Observers Program for Sports) exemplified his dedication to improving the quality of officiating and student-athlete experience throughout the state. DeBerry’s extensive career in education and sports administration showcased his commitment to youth development and made a lasting impact on Tennessee's secondary school sports landscape. His 1999 TSSAA Hall of Fame induction was a well-deserved recognition of his lifelong service and contributions to high school athletics in Tennessee.
