Richard Carroll

Inducted 2003

Richard Carroll's storied career, culminating in his 2003 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, began in 1966 and spanned decades of dedicated service to high school sports in Tennessee. Initially embarking on his career as a teacher and coach, Carroll spent 19 fruitful years (1966-1985) shaping young athletes at various schools, namely Kingsley Middle School, Ketron High School, and Sullivan North High School. His coaching tenure included football, track & field, basketball, and cross country.

Transitioning to administration, Carroll served as Assistant Principal at Sullivan North High School for 16 years from 1985 to 2001 before taking on the role of Principal, a position he held as of his Hall of Fame induction. His administrative career was marked not just by leadership within the school but also by significant contributions to athletics administration statewide.

Of particular note was Carroll's service to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and its associated organizations. He played a pivotal role as Secretary/Treasurer of the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (TIAAA) for 19 years starting in 1985 and took on responsibilities with the TSSAA Legislative Council and Sportsmanship Committee. These roles underscored his commitment to shaping the ethical, sportsmanlike conduct of student-athletes across Tennessee.

Carroll’s achievements included founding membership in the THSAAA (now TIAAA) where his efforts were instrumental in its development. His work on the TIAAA Newsletter, leadership training courses, and planning committees for the State Athletic Director’s Conference all reflect a deep-seated dedication to advancing high school athletics.

His career was distinguished by numerous awards recognizing his leadership and contribution to school athletics, including the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Administration Athletic Director of the Year in 1992, and the NCSSAD Athletic Director of the Year in both 1998 and 1999. Carroll’s enduring impact was further acknowledged by the NIAAA State Award of Merit, Sullivan County’s Award for Excellence in Education, and the National Federation State High School Associations (NFHS) Citation Award in 1998.

Carroll's recognition by the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2003 was a fitting tribute to a career that significantly enriched high school athletics in Tennessee, leaving a legacy of sportsmanship, leadership, and educational excellence.
