Jerry McCarter's celebrated career, punctuated by over 50 years of dedication to TSSAA member schools, began in 1968. His initial foray into the world of high school sports saw him embracing the role of a basketball official, a position he held with distinction for 31 years. McCarter's tireless work ethic and an unwavering commitment to fairness on the court led him to officiate numerous pivotal games across the state. These included several district, region, and sub-state tournament games, showcasing his ability to perform under the pressure of high-stakes environments.

Notably, McCarter's expertise and integrity earned him the privilege of working three TSSAA state tournaments in the years 1981, 1985, and 1992. These appointments underscored his reputation as a top-tier official, capable of managing the intensity and complexity of championship-level play. Beyond the realm of high school basketball, McCarter also contributed 18 years to collegiate basketball, serving as an official at both the NAIA and JUCO levels. Transitioning from the court to a supervisory role, McCarter spent over 20 years as a Supervisor in the Knoxville South Basketball Officials Association.
