George Pitts

Inducted 2010


George Pitts, born on February 17, 1947, embarked on a storied career in Tennessee high school athletics that culminated in his 2010 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Pitts dedicated 27 years to coaching basketball across several high schools from 1970 to 1997, beginning at Young High School and progressing through South-Young High School, Bearden High School, and finally Science Hill High School. His coaching tenure is marked by significant achievements and contributions to the TSSAA, notably his unprecedented success in boys' basketball championships.

Pitts' coaching prowess led his teams to an impressive overall record of 820 wins against 211 losses. His tenure at Science Hill High School was particularly distinguished, securing three TSSAA State Championships in 1990, 1994, and 1995. However, it was at Brentwood Academy where Pitts' legacy was solidified within TSSAA history. Under his guidance, Brentwood Academy's boys' basketball team achieved an extraordinary feat by winning four consecutive state titles from 2003 to 2006, a record unparalleled in the annals of TSSAA boys' basketball.

In addition to his coaching roles, Pitts also served as an athletic director for Bearden High School (1983-1984) and Science Hill High School (1997-1999), further demonstrating his commitment to high school athletics. He later assumed the position of Principal at Science Hill High School from 1999 to 2001 before moving on to Brentwood Academy as Dean of Students and basketball coach until 2006.

Post-high school, Pitts continued his coaching career at King College in Bristol, TN, where he furthered his success by leading the men’s basketball team to three AAC Championships and three NAIA National Tournament qualifications. George Pitts' induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2010 is a testament to his unparalleled contribution to Tennessee high school sports, his excellence in coaching, and his role in shaping the future of countless young athletes. His legacy within TSSAA and the broader sporting community remains influential and enduring.
