Leonard Staggs’ illustrious career as a coach and educator, spanning from 1948 to 1974, culminated in his 1988 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, a testament to his significant contributions to high school athletics in Tennessee. Beginning his teaching and coaching career at Giles County High School in the spring of 1948, Staggs soon moved to Lawrence County High School in the fall of the same year, embarking on a journey that would see him leaving an indelible mark over the next two decades.

At Lawrence County High School, Staggs served as the football coach, achieving 125 wins and 11 winning seasons, reflecting his coaching prowess and ability to inspire teams to success. However, his influence wasn't limited to the football field; as a basketball coach, he boasted an impressive record of 354 wins, six district titles, four region championships, six TSSAA State Tournament appearances, and two TSSAA State Tournament Final Four appearances. These accomplishments highlighted his versatility and dedication to developing athletic programs across multiple sports.

Beyond his coaching achievements, Staggs also contributed significantly to the broader community and school sports infrastructure. He was named Football Coach of the Year in 1964, founded the Lawrenceburg Little League Baseball Program, directed the Summer Youth Program, created the Lawrence County High School Quarterback Club, and was instrumental in the construction of a new stadium at Lawrence County High School in 1982. This stadium was later named in his honor, cementing his legacy within the community.

Staggs' contribution to the TSSAA and high school athletics in Tennessee was profound. His career not only included remarkable achievements in coaching but also demonstrated a commitment to fostering community and youth engagement through sports.
