Jim Poston's distinguished career spanning over four decades as a teacher and coach in the field of athletics, particularly in tennis, culminated in his well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1998. Beginning his career in 1957 at Sewanee Military Academy and then serving at Montgomery Bell Academy from 1959 to 1968 and again from 1971 until his retirement in 1998, with a brief stint at Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, from 1968 to 1971, Poston demonstrated unwavering commitment and exceptional skill in shaping young athletes.

During his tenure, Poston's tennis teams achieved remarkable success, boasting a record of 375 wins against just 61 losses. His leadership led to winning 24 District Titles, 24 Region Titles, and securing 2 TSSAA State Championships alongside 7 times as TSSAA State Runners-Up. Beyond his coaching responsibilities, Poston played a significant role in organizing tennis tournaments at various levels, including the District, Region, and State levels, highlighting his invaluable service to TSSAA and his broad influence on the sport.

His contributions were recognized nationally and across the state; he was nominated four times for the National High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award, winning it in 1997, and was named Tennessee Coach of the Year three times. Additionally, Poston played a pivotal role in the tennis community beyond high school athletics, engaging with city organizations, the Southern Tennis Association, and the United States Tennis Association.

Jim Poston's legacy extends beyond his impressive record and titles. His teams consistently performed at a top level, with appearances in the Final Four annually after the state format change in 1988, a testament to his enduring impact and the high standards he set. The TSSAA Hall of Fame induction not only honored his achievements on the court but also recognized his contribution to promoting excellence and sportsmanship in high school athletics.
