Ephriam "King" Berrong Jr. began his notable career in sports and education immediately after his collegiate achievements, transitioning into a role that would eventually solidify his legacy within the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Born on February 9, 1925, he initially set his career in motion at Vonore High School in Vonore, TN, during the 1948-1949 academic year. There, he demonstrated his multifaceted coaching skills, leading teams in football, boys’ basketball, and girls’ basketball.

After a brief period, Berrong moved to Sweetwater High School in 1951, where he remained until 1988. His tenure at Sweetwater was distinguished by remarkable achievements, particularly in football. Under his leadership, Sweetwater's football teams reached the TSSAA playoffs four times, became the TSSAA Runner-Up in 1970, and clinched the TSSAA State Championships in both 1971 and 1972. Beyond football, he also contributed to boys’ basketball and baseball, showcasing his versatile coaching abilities.

Berrong's impact extended beyond coaching. For two years, 1959 to 1961, he served as the principal of Sweetwater High School, further emphasizing his dedication to education and athletics. His coaching success was underscored by an impressive combined football record of 177 wins, 74 losses, and 14 ties, including two undefeated teams and experiencing only two losing seasons throughout his career.

Beyond the field, Berrong was a notable figure at Maryville College, playing football and baseball. His contributions to sports and education were recognized through various accolades, including having the football stadium at Sweetwater High School named in his honor and his induction into multiple halls of fame, including Blount County and Monroe County Halls of Fame.

In 2000, Ephriam Berrong Jr.'s profound service to TSSAA and his exceptional career were celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, an honor highlighting his enduring impact on high school sports within Tennessee.
